Volume stack

A volume (or 3D) stack is a collection of parallel 2D planes (normally uniformly spaced) that build up a volume representation of an intensity distribution. This is a typical way of getting a 3D image from a Fluorescence Microscope.

Not all volume stacks are necessarily 3D images because the information of different planes may be entangled. See Three Dee Microscope.
