Owen Schwartz

Dr. Owen Schwartz is the head of the Biological Imaging Facility of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Researchers from across the institute come to him with their samples in order to collect microscopic images and get the best possible data. The facility aims to have the most state-of-the-art equipment ready for the institute, so that everyone has access to it. Huygens was recommended to Dr. Schwartz by a friend who convinced him with her enthusiasm. He organizes training courses for members of the institute, on using confocal microscopes and imaging software, including Huygens. About Huygens he says: "I think the important thing is that you are able to do restoration, because after all, some of the samples are not always prepared as well they should be, so there is a little bit of mismatch of refractive index. And therefore you get distortion and the resolution won't be as good as it should be. Using the Huygens we can try to get back the best possible resolution." Huygens is also ideal for colocalization: seeing two probes in the same region becomes more meaningful at higher resolution with the noise and blur removed.
